The Saskatoon Blades will be without star goalie Andrey Makarov for the near future because of a concussion.
Makarov wowed hockey fans earlier this month at the world junior championship tournament, playing in net for Team Russia. His team captured silver.
Makarov was in net for the Blades’ game against the Regina Pats.
However, Makarov was hit in the first period of the game and suffered a concussion.
“It’s a situation where he’s going to be out a minimum of seven days,” Lorne Molleken, the Blades coach, told CBC News Tuesday. “He’s concussed so we want to be real, real careful with it.”
Molleken said after a week, Makarov will be checked out again. Molleken also said he will not play again until he has recovered.
“It’s one of those things we have to deal with as a group and we’re just hoping that he’s going to be better here sooner than later,” he said.
Molleken said the signs of a concussion were noted by the team trainer.
“When our trainer goes out to check him all signs are leaning that he’s okay, he feels okay, but when he comes in minutes later after the period ends he has a headache and feels sick to his stomach so right away the doctors took all the precautions,” he explained.
