Another concussion scare as Flyers lose Giroux
In the latest National Hockey League concussion scare to a star player, NHL scoring leader Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers has been sidelined indefinitely.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Tuesday that the 23-year-old Canadian right wing’s concussion symptoms have became worse since he suffered the injury last week in a game against Tampa Bay.
On Monday, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby was sidelined indefinitely by his team because of recurring concussion symptoms. He had been back for only eight games after missing 10 months due to concussion symptoms.
Giroux took an inadvertent knee to the head from teammate Wayne Simmonds late in the second period last Saturday and did not play in the third period. He had already been scratched for Tuesday’s game at Washington.
“Claude reported not feeling very good today,” Holmgren said. “Over the past few days, his symptoms have gradually gotten worse. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.”
Giroux has scored 16 goals and has set-up 23 others to stand as the NHL’s top point producer in leading the Flyers to the top of the Eastern Conference with 18 triumphs in 28 games for 39 points.
In the NHL, only Minnesota and Chicago have more standings points than the Flyers and they have both played two more games than Philadelphia.
