Columbia, SC (WLTX) – The average concussion lasts between 10 to 14 days and can be caused by a severe hit to the ribs.

“A lot of times, people think that it needs to be contact to the brain, but it could be a hit to the body that has rotated force to the brain,” says Dr. Jeff Holloway of Palmetto Health Richland.

When a concussion is suspect from the sidelines, Holloway wants to know if players can, “remember the play, remember the score, that sort of thing to see how they’re doing.”

Holloway says there are better tests around to know if a concussion has happened.  Sporting goods stores like Todd and Moore in Columbia have better equipment to protect against those sorts of injuries.

“It has a shock bonnet down inside. The shock bonnet has holes on it so when you do get hit, the air comes out slowly and controls the pressure inside the helmet,” says Terri Daniels of Todd and Moore Sporting Goods.

Compared to older style helmets, newer versions are made to specifically protect against concussion injuries.
