Islanders goalie has concussion

NHL: Friday’s notebook

Uniondale, N.Y. — New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro is out with a concussion again — the latest in an array of injuries — and there is no timetable for his return.

He was struck in the mask on a shot by Brian Rolston (Flint) during practice Wednesday and underwent tests Thursday, the team said Friday.

DiPietro didn’t play in any of New York’s first three regular-season games.

DiPietro has played a total of 39 games the past three seasons.

He is in the sixth season of a landmark 15-year contract with the Islanders.

DiPietro, the backup to goalie Al Montoya (Michigan) in the first two games, was scratched for the Islanders’ 5-1 victory over the Lightning, with Evgeni Nabokov as the backup for the first time since he joined the Islanders.

DiPietro missed most of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons because of a knee injury.

Penguins forward Arron Asham wanted to fire up his teammates when he dropped the gloves with Washington’s Jay Beagle in the third period on Thursday.

Asham, however, took it a step too far when he rubbed it in as Beagle lay stunned on the ice, and he called himself on it.

Saying it was “classless,” Asham apologized for mocking Beagle after dropping him with two punches in Washington’s 3-2 overtime win.

Asham decked Beagle with a pair of right hands, sending him face-first onto the ice. Asham then spread his arms out, palms down, like a referee signaling a fighter is “out” as he skated to the penalty box and followed it up by placing his hands on the side of his head to imitate someone sleeping.

“It’s unfortunate the way the fight ended,” Asham said. “I wanted to win but I didn’t want to go out and hurt anyone..”

… Blues forward Andy McDonald has returned to St. Louis to be evaluated for a possible concussion.

McDonald was hurt in the second period of a 3-2 loss Thursday night at Dallas.

… The Devils say injured goalie Martin Brodeur traveled with the team to Tennessee , but his status for tonight’s game against the Predators remains uncertain.

Brodeur was forced to leave the Devils’ game against the Kings on Thursday after one period because of a minor shoulder injury.

He tweaked his right shoulder with about eight minutes left in the first period of the Devils’ 2-1 shootout win when he landed awkwardly while diving across the crease to make a blocker save.

Brodeur finished the period before leaving the game.

… Former Flyers captain Mike Richards returns to Philadelphia with the Kings tonight. Richards was traded for forwards Brayden Schenn , Wayne Simmonds and a second-round pick.
