Concussion shelves Snee

The Giants not only lost 36-25 to the Seahawks yesterday but they also lost their right guard, Chris Snee, who suffered a concussion on the final drive, looked shaky in the locker room afterward and spent the night at a local hospital for further observation.

It is too soon to determine anything, but it is highly likely Snee is going to have to miss some time, starting with Sunday’s home game against the Bills.

Snee’s injury led to a strange end-game scenario. First-year lineman Jim Cordle was signed this past week off the practice squad because starting center David Baas was out with a neck injury. Kevin Boothe made his first career start at center and when Snee went down and Cordle ran onto the field, he didn’t know for sure which position he would take.

“I ran in there, Kevin said, ‘What do you want?’ and I said ‘I’ll take center,’ ” Cordle said. “It was pretty cool, I thought I was going to go in for a game-winning drive and it would feel a lot better than it does now.”

After one play at center, offensive line coach Pat Flaherty singled for Cordle and Boothe to switch; Boothe moved to center and Cordle moved to right guard. That means Cordle, in his first NFL game, played two positions. Actually, Cordle played three positions. Long-snapper Zak DeOssie exited early with a concussion and Cordle assumed the long-snapping duties.

Rookie fullback Henry Hynoski exited in the second half with a neck burner. . . . The Seahawks made up ground in their loss last week to the Falcons by using a no-huddle offense, and the Giants knew they would use it again against them.

“We practiced for that all week, we knew it was coming,” defensive end Osi Umenyiora said. “We just weren’t able to stop ‘em.” . . . Lost in the defeat was an impressive performance from tight end Jake Ballard, who caught three passes for 72 yards – including a 12-yard touchdown – and excited the crowd with a rumbling 32-yard catch and run. . . . As expected, defensive end Justin Tuck (neck/groin) and running back Brandon Jacobs (knee) did not play.

Safety Kenny Phillips was called for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter after a hit on Seahawks tight end Zack Miller and said he expects to hear from the league about the hit. “The ref said I didn’t hit him in the head,” Phillips said. “I just launched at him. I probably did, I don’t know. I’m not sure. I just have to except the penalty.” . . . Safety Deon Grant had a chance for two first-quarter interceptions off Tarvaris Jackson and dropped them both. . . . Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had 2½ sacks — the fifth two-sack game of his brief career — and now has seven sacks this season.

The Giants’ 395 net passing yards was the fifth-highest total in franchise history and the most since Oct. 13, 1985. . . Cornerback Aaron Ross‘ second-quarter interception was his third of the season, matching his career-high set as a rookie in 2007 and again in 2008.
