Terry Boss’ latest concussion could be season-threatening
Sounders FC backup goalkeeper Terry Boss is back in town after suffering an apparent concussion while with the Puerto Rican national team. The 30-year-old, who arrived in Seattle last night, was in street clothes as he watched practice Tuesday and will be evaluated by team doctors.
Coach Sigi Schmid said Boss is most likely out for Saturday’s game against Real Salt Lake as the team errs on the side of caution, but a history of related issues could mean an even longer absence.
Boss also sustained a concussion in a July 20 exhibition against Manchester United and missed time with another one in 2009.
“For sure it’s a thing that could threaten the rest of the season at this stage with the amount that it’s been,” said Schmid. “Whether it goes beyond that, as to the career, that’s something that you have to see. As I’ve said, I’ve been through it with Chad Marshall (in Columbus). They shut Chad Marshall down in the 2007 season basically I think from August on … and he’s played three-four years now without any issues. So sometimes it does turn around, but right now he’s had a few this year, so it could threaten the rest of the season.”
With Boss’ status uncertain and the MLS roster freeze approaching on Sept. 15, the Sounders could be forced into making a decision soon. Schmid the team is discussing its options, whether that means signing someone (Bryan Meredith anyone?) or using a league pool goalkeeper.
“Right now it’s too early to deal with that until we know Terry’s full assessment,” said Schmid.
Here’s a video I was passed along of an alleged incident in Puerto Rico’s World Cup qualifier Friday against St. Kitts and Nevis, but I can’t confirm whether it’s the play where Boss was injured.
