A puck ricocheting off the end glass struck Brett Morgan in the back of the neck, resulting in the Kingston Frontenacs forward being removed from practice on a stretcher on Friday morning at the K-Rock Centre.
Morgan was diagnosed at hospital with a concussion. He was released in the afternoon, returning to his billet’s home.
“He’s all good. He was a little sore but is moving everything. The bad news is it’s another concussion for him,” general manager Doug Gilmour said.
The freak accident occurred during a shooting drill. The puck struck Morgan in the exposed area of the back of his neck just below the back of his helmet.
Morgan, 18, fell in a heap in the south-west corner of the ice surface. He was attended to immediately by trainer Craig Belfer.
Morgan was treated by paramedics, who placed him on a spinal board and then on to a stretcher.
Morgan was taken to the awaiting ambulance at the north end of the arena where the Zamboni comes out.
Gilmour, who went to see Morgan before he was wheeled away, said the paramedics and ambulance were called as a precautionary step
“You have to do the safe thing. That’s why it all went down that way. We want to do everything correct,” Gilmour said.
“Brett was moving his limbs and all that before (he left in ambulance). The problem for him is that he had three concussions last year.”
Morgan is being confined to a dark room at home. He isn’t allowed to be active or do things like watch television or use a computer.
“We’ll see how it is (on Saturday),” Gilmour said. “It is his decision and his agent’s (Mark Guy) as to where he wants to go. It’s his fourth concussion in a year. It’s serious for the kid.”
The Brampton native had been enjoying a good training camp. He scored three goals in Tuesday’s final scrimmage win by Team Black.
Morgan had been playing left wing on a line with new Frontenac Petr Beranek.
Morgan played in 38 games last season. He scored four goals before a second concussion in the regular season his season in February.
