Illinois concussion law in effect
By Dana Dean
St. Louis (KSDK) — This weekend, new rules to help protect young athletes from brain injuries go into effect in Missouri.
Missouri and Illinois now join 26 other states that have youth concussion laws.
Concussion laws all over the country follow three main principles: Educate youth athletes, remove anyone who appears to have suffered a concussion, and require them to be cleared by a licensed health care professional. In Missouri, it goes into effect on Sunday. It is already in effect in Illinois.
Doctors say there are serious consequences from getting back in the game too soon after a head injury. If athletes get another injury before the brain is healed, they can die from a condition called Second Impact Syndrome. A doctor at Children’s Hospital says it’s a good thing youth athletes can’t go back in the game now for 24 hours, but he worries the new law may keep kids from reporting concussions because they’ll be kept out of the game.
Dr. Mark Halstead said, “It’s a catch 22. We have a law to try and protect them but it also may make things a little more challenging because they may not want to be as forthcoming.”
